Oil on wooden panel

This painting is part of a body of work painted in 2023 considering how light relates to darkness - a concept that can be found in art and craftsmanship across many centuries past, from paintings by Caravaggio and Leonardo to stained glass art by artisans in the mediaeval period or by artists like Chagall and John Piper in the modern era. It has been built up in layers of abstract forms representing values and colours reflecting the cool but bright burst of light experienced on a clear morning at dawn. Although the shapes and spatial perspective remain somewhat undefined, it nevertheless aims to place the viewer in a landscape filled with a freshness and the new dawn's light breaking in.

The painting is on a cradled wooden panel and has a smooth finish with very little of the wood grain showing. The edges are painted with a clear gesso.
