Oil on canvas

Painting of a hazy sunlit waterside

This oil painting on extra fine canvas is part of a body of work I've painted in 2023 considering how light relates to darkness. I built the painting up in layers of abstract and representational forms. Although the shapes and spatial perspective remain somewhat undefined, it aims to place the viewer into a light-filled open-air experience, taking in dazzling sunlight rising above water. It is purposefully abstract in terms of place: whether that is coastal, city or rural - the place is not significant and is left up to the viewer to interpret through the lens of their own life and experiences. What is significant is the experience of light breaking through shadow and darkness, something we can all relate to one way or another as human beings in the world.
