This was created following a period of time painting a series based on artificial intelligence, where I researched and experimented with imagery created by AI models. The Upper Room was painted intuitively, built up with several layers of translucent and opaque abstract forms. The human act of creating an artwork from scratch juxtaposed perfectly with the artificially created images I’d been reviewing and experimenting with. The title The Upper Room is a nod to historical paintings about the Last Supper, which inspired me to start the painting - abstracting the viewpoints and forms that I imagined could make up a representational painting about the subject, supplemented by biblical accounts. I then introduced elements of colour and light influenced by Matisse’s stained glass which I had been reading about at the time.
